Battletoads

Release Date: Aug 20, 2020 – Platform: Steam

More than two decades have passed since the release of Battletoads Arcade, leading many fans to worry they’d never get a chance to witness their favorite anthropomorphic toads on a new adventure. Fortunately, Microsoft has stepped in to help resurrect the iconic beat ’em up with Rare and Dlala Studios partnering to handle production.

2020’s Battletoads will maintain the series’ iconic gameplay along with support for local three-player couch co-op. The game features updated hand-drawn visuals, difficulty scaling, a checkpoint system, and reworked controls for those dreaded bike sequences. Still no word on the game’s release date, but expect that to change soon if recent leaks are to believe.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2

Release Date: Sep 4, 2020 – Platform: Epic

Activision caught everyone by surprise with an announcement that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 were being remade for PC and current-gen consoles. The game plans on staying true to the spirit of the PS1 originals while adding some modern amenities, most notably better graphics. Additionally, tricks from later Tony Hawk games will make an appearance alongside new Create-A-Skater and Create-A-Park tools.

Fittingly, developer Vicarious Visions has been tapped for the remake, whose previous credits include the recent Crash Bandicoot remake as well as ports of THPS2/3 for the Game Boy Advance back in the day. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 is currently slated for a fall release and will support both local and online multiplayer at launch.

Marvel’s Avengers

Release Date: Sep 4, 2020 – Platform: Steam

Crystal Dynamics will be putting their spin on the iconic band of heroes when Marvel’s Avengers drops on Xbox One this September. So far, we know the game takes place outside of both the Marvel comic-book and cinematic universes and plans on telling an original story that casts Taskmaster as one of the main villains.

It’s been confirmed that Marvel’s Avengers will feature two separate modes: a single-player campaign and an online multiplayer component where up to four players can team up to tackle side missions that connect back to the main story. The game is categorized as an action RPG and will let you customize each hero’s appearance as well as modify their abilities to fit different playstyles.

Watch Dogs: Legion

Release Date: Oct 29, 2020 – Platform: Steam

Watch Dogs: Legion takes the hacking-based gameplay the series is known for and sets it loose in the city of London. However, this time around, you won’t be playing as a single pre-determined character. Instead, Legion sees you assembling a team of hackers to rebel against a private military that has seized the city. Presented as NPCs in the open-world, members of your squad possess unique strengths and weaknesses that can impact gameplay.

One character may be a better driver but a terrible shot; another may excel at hacking but have an extensive criminal record, making them easily recognizable by authorities. Characters will sometimes be unavailable and can even be permanently killed off via an optional difficulty setting. In addition to a full single-player campaign, Legion will feature an online mode with cooperative missions and side activities.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: Little Hope

Release Date: Oct 30, 2020 – Platform: Steam

Little Hope will be the second entry in the horror adventure anthology created by British game studio Supermassive Games, best known for the PS4 exclusive Until Dawn. Played from a third-person POV, the game will see you controlling one of five playable characters as you try to survive in a small town plagued by supernatural horrors.

Just like with previous Supermassive titles, you’ll end up having to replay scenarios from each character’s perspective if you want to experience the full story and witness every possible outcome. The Dark Pictures Anthology will consist of eight unique games in total, with the studio planning to release two new games a year until they reach their goal.

Cyberpunk 2077

Release Date: Nov 19, 2020 – Platform: Steam

Arguably the biggest early release of 2020, Cyberpunk 2077, has some pretty big shoes to fill. After all, CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher 3 is considered to be one of the best games of the last decade and has set the bar extremely high for the Polish developer’s next project. While the game’s PS4 release has been pushed back to September 2020, chances are it will come to the PS5 as well.

Described as a first-person action RPG, the game is set in a dystopian future where the lines between human and AI have become blurred more than ever. Taking on the role of a customizable protagonist named V, players will make their way through Night City, a sprawling open-world overflowing with technology, crime, and neon.

Empire of Sin

Release Date: Fall 2020 – Platform: Steam

Empire of Sin is a turn-based action/strategy title that tosses players into the seedy underbelly of 1920s Prohibition-era Chicago. The game tasks you with building a criminal empire from the ground up by mastering a variety of different rackets, such as speakeasies, union protection, and casinos.

To make a name for yourself, you’ll have to expand your influence by taking over rival territories and hiring loyal street soldiers. However, the journey won’t be easy as corruption and violence pressure you to bribe, intimidate, and when all else fails, go to war with rival gangs.

Halo: Infinite

Release Date: Holiday 2020 – Platform: Steam | Xbox Game Pass

Microsoft has been surprisingly tight-lipped regarding the next Halo entry, considering they plan to release it in less than a year. Halo: Infinite will be the sixth mainline entry in the first-person shooter franchise, and one of the first games officially confirmed to be launching on Xbox’s next console, the Series X.

Xbox One owners need not fret as Infinite will be coming to both platforms on day one. Current speculation suggests the game’s story is set during the “Reclaimer Saga” of Halo and plans to tell a more mature story centered around Master Chief and Cortana’s relationship. Additionally, it will see the debut of 343’s new Slipspace Engine, which developed alongside Halo: Infinite

Evil Genius 2: World Domination

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

The 2004 management sim Evil Genius is finally getting a proper sequel in 2020, with Rebellion handling both production and the game’s publishing. Evil Genius 2: World Domination will see players reprising their role as an evil mastermind as they build a secret base from the ground-up while recruiting and managing an army of minions.

An early gameplay trailer highlights the many improvements and new features being worked into the sequel. These include streamlined base construction and minion recruitment systems as well as the ability to send minions out on missions once they’ve been properly trained. Evil lairs can now be infiltrated by secret agents, requiring players to use a variety of over-the-top defenses to stop them.

Windjammers 2

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Fans of the cult frisbee-meets-tennis sports phenomenon will get to experience intense disc-throwing bouts when Windjammers 2 releases later this year. The sequel will introduce new features along with updated visuals inspired by the original arcade cabinet art. Replacing the 2D sprites are vibrant, hand-drawn character designs that breathe new life and expand upon the series’ roster of larger-than-life competitors.

The benefits of this new look become clear once you see the game in motion, with characters performing flashy, over-the-top animations that see them launching into the air, charging up for powerful throws, and celebrating between each set. Windjammers 2 is being produced by French developer DotEmu, who also worked on the 2017 port of the original game for current-gen consoles.

Due Process

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Expected to hit Steam Early Access this year, Due Process is an upcoming 5v5 tactical FPS that sees two teams competing to either infiltrate or defend procedurally-generated locations for a set amount of time. At the start of each match, teams are given a planning session to gear-up, go over their strategy, and analyze the location’s layout for any potential weak spots or entry points.

Once the round begins, things switch over to real-time action as one squad tries to break in and eliminate the defending squad. Players have access to a wide selection of weapons and gadgets to help them in their mission. An alpha build was available in 2019 so we should hear word concerning a beta or Early Access release in the coming months.

Ghostrunner

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Considering how hard it is to make first-person platforming look appealing, Ghostrunner is proving to be a slick and stylish attempt that we’ll be keeping on our radar. Slated to release in 2020, the game sees you playing as a lethal sword-wielding assassin tasked with leading a rebellion against a villainous figure known as The Keymaster.

As you ascend a massive structure performing fluid parkour maneuvers like wall-running in tandem with a fancy grappling hook, The Keymaster’s minions will try to stop you by any means. Thankfully, a tech-infused katana allows you to make mincemeat of any foe while looking like a cool Cyberpunk ninja. According to impressions from a recent demo, the game has a lot going for it in both the gameplay department as well as visuals.

Spelunky 2

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Spelunky 2 is an upcoming 2D-platformer with some rogue-like elements, being co-developed by self-published Mossmouth and Blitworks. The sequel carries over many of the gameplay mechanics from the first while also sporting enhanced visuals and a host of new characters, enemies, obstacles, and treasures.

Players take control of a spelunker and begin exploring a series of procedurally-generated caves while collecting treasure, battling enemies, and avoiding traps. One of the best parts of the original was how unique each run felt, so it came as a pleasant surprise when Mossmouth announced they would be sticking to the formula for Spelunky 2.

Garden Story

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Indie developer Picogram has partnered with Rose City Games to publish Garden Story, a hybrid social sim/adventure RPG with farming sim mechanics.  The game sees you controlling an adorable-looking grape named Concord who’s just been crowned village guardian. Embracing his new title, Concord sets out to restore Grove Island to its former glory by identifying the source behind a mysterious Rot destroying the land.

With help from his friends and neighbors, Concord will travel to new regions, solve puzzles, and care for the environment. Throughout the game, players will become well-acquainted with the numerous creatures that call Grove island home as they complete favors and create memories to fill Concord’s scrapbook with new skills.

F.I.S.T Forged in Shadow Torch

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

F.I.S.T. is an upcoming exploration-based platformer with an eye-catching aesthetic developer TiGames calls “dieselpunk.” In it, you play as Rayton, an anthropomorphic bunny who has spent the last six years in hiding following the collapse of his home, Torch City. Rayton is soon forced to return to battle when his friend gets kidnapped by a race of machine-like enemies who control the world.

Armed with a trio of weapons that includes a mechanized fist, a drill, and a whip, Rayton sets out to find his friend’s kidnappers and take down the Machine Legion once and for all. F.I.S.T. features a unique arcade-style combat system that relies on performing combo chains using Rayton’s diverse arsenal. No word on a release date, but the game’s blend of 2D gameplay and atmospheric 3D backgrounds will surely be a sight to behold.

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Silksong was initially planned as DLC for Hollow Knight; however, developer Team Cherry was very ambitious in creating the project and kept expanding upon their initial ideas until the game felt large enough to warrant a sequel. While the game will retain many of Hollow Knight’s core Metroidvania elements, it will be using them in slightly different ways.

For one, players will be controlling Hornet, a curious bug-like creature who uses a needle to fight. At the start of the game, Hornet gets captured and taken to an unknown, haunted kingdom. Players will have to escape the kingdom by making their way upwards instead of downwards like the first game, encountering over 150 new creatures along the way.

Twin Mirror

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Twin Mirror will see Life is Strange developer Dontnod back at the helm with an original story focusing on a new cast of characters. You play from the perspective of 33-year-old Sam, a man struggling with depression that becomes much worse upon returning to his hometown for his best friend’s funeral. One morning, Sam wakes up in his hotel room to find his shirt bloody, and his memory wiped.

Unable to recall events from the night prior, Sam sets off to investigate where he was and what happened from the time he left his hotel room up until he woke up. The murder mystery aspect appears to be only part of what Twin Mirror has to offer, with the narrative ultimately focusing on Sam finding redemption in the face of bitterness and loneliness. The game is expected to release sometime in 2020.

Dying Light 2

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Although Techland recently delayed the next entry in their zombie-parkour survival series, Dying Light 2 is still expected to release on PC through Steam. The first-person action RPG is set after the events of the first game and introduces Aiden Caldwell, an infected zombie virus survivor who uses his superb dexterity and combat prowess to gain allies and constantly escape the clutches of the undead.

Dying Light 2 plans on delivering a refined traversal system with more fluid animations along with highly-interactive environments where players can swing from ropes and even ride on the roof of vehicles. Techland has also included more player-choice this time around, offering a dynamic open-world that evolves throughout the game.

Psychonauts 2

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Announced back in 2015, Psychonauts 2 was scheduled to release in 2018 before getting delayed to 2019. It appears fans will have to give developer Double Fine Productions a bit more time as the sequel has been pushed back yet again, now slated for a 2020 release.

In a recent statement to fans, the developer explains, “We know it’s always disappointing when you have to wait a bit longer, but we also know that you are an amazing, supportive bunch, who … want the game to be as good as possible.” The sequel tries to maintain the third-person platforming action of the original while telling a new story centered around Raz’s family.

Biomutant

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

2019 came and went, and we still don’t have an exact release date for THQ Nordic’s upcoming action RPG, Biomutant. The game is currently in development by Stockholm-based Experiment 101, a studio founded by former Avalanche Studios creative director Stefan Ljungqvist, best known for the Just Cause Series.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, Biomutant sees you playing as a raccoon-like creature with the ability to acquire mutations and attach bio-mechanical body parts that affect combat and traversal. It seems likely the game will be released sometime in 2020, according to a recent financial report from the publisher’s parent company.

Rainbow Six: Quarantine

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

The last game to be delayed following its announcement at E3 2019 is Rainbow Six Quarantine. Although Ubisoft never confirmed a release date, many were expecting to get their hands on the shooter relatively soon. However, there’s a high chance they’ll have to wait upwards of a year since the game has been delayed in the same manner as Legion and Gods & Monsters.

It’s also one of the titles mentioned in Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot’s announcement concerning cross-generational titles. Described as a “3-player tactical co-op FPS,” RSQ appears to be incorporating elements of horror, with the teaser trailer depicting zombie-like creatures. Additionally, the player character is infected with some kind of illness, likely sharing some connection to the zombies.

Atomic Heart

Release Date: TBA – Platform: Steam

Originally planned to release in 2018 and then later 2019, Atomic Heart has had one of the more interesting development stories, with rumors suggesting it may not even be the same game anymore. Categorized as a “first-person shooter with RPG elements,” the game is well into the process of development at studio Mundfish, a Russian-based indie game studio.

Evoking memories of sci-fi staples like BioShock and Fallout, Atomic Heart takes place in an alternate reality where the Soviet Union’s research has led to a technical revolution. Players assume control of a Soviet KGB officer tasked with infiltrating a secret facility that’s gone radio silent.
